In early June, we had the joy of planning a marriage proposal on the terrace of the Royal Champagne, in Champillon, just above Épernay. Sander wanted to surprise Kirsten in a place worthy of their love for the region: facing the vineyards, in the golden evening light, just before a dinner for two.

Set on the hillsides of Champillon, in the heart of the Montagne de Reims, the Royal Champagne Hôtel & Spa overlooks the Marne valley and the UNESCO World Heritage vineyards. Just ten minutes from Épernay, it enjoys one of the most beautiful panoramas in the region.
It was on the terrace of the Le Bellevue restaurant, opening onto rows of vines as far as the eye can see, that we designed the staging of the proposal. It is hard to imagine a more romantic setting: the soft light of late afternoon, the calm of the hillsides and that view stretching all the way to the horizon.
Everything about this place set the scene for an unforgettable moment:
- a panoramic view over the vineyards and the Marne valley
- the gentle atmosphere of a terrace at sunset
- the understated elegance of an exceptional address
- the dinner at Le Bellevue waiting just steps away
Sander and Kirsten: a weekend in Champagne, a surprise on the terrace
Sander and Kirsten love Champagne. They had planned a romantic weekend in the region, and Sander had booked a table for dinner at Le Bellevue. We built the surprise around this plan.
To keep everything flowing smoothly and make sure Kirsten suspected nothing, we came up with a simple pretext: a drink on the terrace before sitting down to dinner. By the time that drink was poured, everything was already in place.
At 7 p.m., facing the vineyards, Sander proposed. The surprise was complete, and that is exactly what makes the moment so precious: a genuine emotion, captured as it happened.
Behind the scenes of a proposal planned down to the last detail
Behind the magic of a successful proposal lies real preparation. The whole challenge is to stay invisible on the day, so the soon-to-be-engaged couple experience only what matters: the emotion.
A few weeks before the big day, we contacted the Royal Champagne and carried out a site visit to scout the ideal spot on the terrace and confirm every detail of the staging.
To craft this bespoke moment, we coordinated several vendors chosen according to the couple’s wishes and budget:
- a conversation with the restaurant’s sommelier to select a champagne close to Kirsten’s taste, to enjoy right after the proposal
- finding a florist to dress the setting with delicacy
- choosing a photographer to capture the moment, discreetly
- a carefully timed setup during that pre-dinner drink
This upstream preparation is at the very heart of our work as an event planner in Champagne: anticipating, coordinating and making sure the surprise stays intact right to the end.
Our favorite moment: capturing the emotion right then and there
If we had to keep just one moment, it would be this one: joining the newly engaged couple right after the proposal to capture their emotions in the heat of the moment. Seeing Sander and Kirsten glowing, still taken aback by the surprise, will remain one of our most treasured memories.
A glass of the cuvée chosen with the sommelier was waiting for them to toast that yes, before they made their way to their table for a dinner they will remember for a long time.
A successful proposal is not only a beautiful piece of staging. Above all, it is a surprise kept intact to the very end and a shared emotion, sincere and unforgettable.
